If you own a gun, you must choose to be a safety fanatic. Be paranoid, always double-check yourself. We cannot compromise on the basic safety rules. We must strive for no errors. Determined and solid, set your mind firmly to follow the safety guidelines. Follow the basic rules as a matter of habit, and a matter of character. Take pride and pleasure in how safe you are. As they say, "be religious" about gun safety. It bothers you when others are not safe. Don't get complacent, don't get "too comfortable", because laziness in safety leads to harm.
We have opportunities in our lives for excellence. Practicing good firearms safety is an opportunity in your life for excellence. The only acceptable result in firearms safety is EXCELLENCE. Memorize Jeff Cooper's rules below, always apply these 4 rules.
If you have a carry permit, incorporate safety checks into your day-to-day habits. Have a strong conscience about how you handle yourself when carrying. Ask the most trusted people in your life to let you know if they see you do anything unsafe, to keep you accountable, and do the same for them if they carry. Be especially vigilant when you are out of your routine, and be careful when you're not in your normal day-to-day habits. Most mistakes with concealed carry happen when we are too comfortable and/or out of our routine. Fortunately, many mistakes result in no harm or foul, IF we are very safe from the start with everything and we have more than one safeguard on each safety concern.
Some think that if you are skilled with guns, you don't need to worry as much about safety. Actually, greater skill demands greater safety. The greater one's firearm skills are, safety becomes even more important. The more you are moving while shooting, or shooting at different angles and positions, the demands of safety increase.
In a self-defense situation no one is going to be there making sure that you are following the safety rules. If you have to defend your life and you don't follow the safety rules and you haven't practiced the safety rules ahead of time you are increasing your chances of shooting an innocent person.
Be your own harshest critic. You must be self-accountable and self-disciplined about gun safety.
In all of our classes, we at DrGuns talk about safety, a lot about safety! Consider training with us, and we can help you stay safe. Plus, the safer you are, the more fun you will have enjoying the hunting and shooting sports!
