In this post I'm going to tell you what I think is a huge mental factor in the failure of many proposed gun control laws. This is probably one of the most important psychological realities surrounding the gun debate in the U.S., and it is deep in the psyche of gun owners.
Anyone who has done some target practice in the company of safe and responsible gun owners knows this to be true:

The dirty little secret of gun ownership is that: GUNS ARE FUN !!!
In my experience, people who are advocates of gun control usually don't have any idea how fun it is to put some sports drinks and tasty snacks in the cooler, load up the gear, have a safety briefing at the range, and go shoot some targets! Throw in some steel targets and some spinners, and you've got tons of fun! It ROCKS! Target shooting is a wholesome and challenging sport that requires patience and mental focus, and like many things in life, it's more fun with other people! Hanging out and talking and spending time with your friends or family is a key part of the experience.
For someone who owns a gun that becomes banned, the law and the gun control advocates are saying to the gun owner, "You can't have fun with this gun anymore."
If you've never shot a gun and you want to, ask someone you know who is a responsible and safe gun owner to take you for some target practice.
If you own guns, invite friends to go shooting, and share the fun! Give the new folks a low-recoil gun, setup the targets a few yards away at first, and enjoy a good time!
